EXPERIMENTAL DRUG TREATMENT FOR EBOLA

FEVER DETECTION:
On 28 September, 2014, the 38-year old doctor, who was in charge of an Ebola virus treatment unit in Lakka, Sierra Leone, developed a fever and diarrhea. He tested positive for the virus on the same day. The doctor was airlifted to Frankfurt University Hospital on the 5th day of his illness and admitted to a specialized isolation unit.
PROBLEMS THEREAFTER:
Within 72 hours of admission he developed signs
Ø Vascular leakage
Ø Severe multi-organ failure
·        Lungs
·        Kidneys
·        Gastrointestinal tract
ANTIBIOTIC:
He was placed on a ventilator and on kidney dialysis, and was given antibiotics together with a 3-day course of an experimental drug called FX06—a fibrin-derived peptide that has been shown to reduce vascular leakage and its complications in mice with Dengue hemorrhagic shock.
A marked improvement in vascular and respiratory function was seen under the combined measures of intensive care and drug treatment. After a 30-day observation period, no Ebola virus genetic material was detected in the patient's blood plasma. The patient was released from hospital and is now with his family.
"Even though the patient was critically ill, we were able to support him long enough for his body to start antibody production and for the virus to be cleared by his body's defenses," explains Dr Wolf.
FX06 should be evaluated in clinical trials.


ENERGY HARVEST FROM RAILROAD TRAIN VIBRATION

Engineers have won a national award for an innovative energy harvester that has the potential to save millions of dollars in energy costs for railroads while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The team developed a new type of energy harvester that converts the irregular, oscillatory motion of train-induced rail track vibrations into regular, unidirectional motion, in the same way that an electric voltage rectifier converts AC voltage into DC.
The team's work, "Mechanical Motion Rectifier (MMR) based Railroad Energy Harvester," was awarded "Best Application of Energy Harvesting" at the Energy Harvesting and Storage USA conference, held in Washington.
ESTIMATED RESULT:
Professor Zuo estimates that the invention could save more than $10 million in trackside power supply costs for railroads in New York State alone, along with a reduction of 3000 tons per year of CO2 and a half million dollars of electricity savings.
TEST CASE:
The U.S. has the longest rail tracks in the world, approximately 140,700 miles. But it is very costly to power the track-side electrical infrastructure, such as the signal lights, cross gates, track switches and monitoring sensors.
Mechanical Motion Rectifier (MMR):
MMR based Railroad Energy Harvester can harness 200 watts of electric energy from train-induced track deflections to power the track-side electrical devices. The innovative mechanical motion rectifier converts the irregular up-and-down vibration motion into unidirectional rotation of the generator by using two one-way clutches, thus breaking the fundamental challenge of vibration energy harvesting and offering significant advantages of high efficiency and high reliability.
APPROVAL:
The technology of the MMR based Railroad Energy Harvester has been licensed to Electric Truck, LLC/Harvest NRG, Inc. The project is supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation's University Transportation Research Center (UTRC-II), New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), SUNY Research Foundation and private industry.

FURTHER ACHIEVEMENTS:
Professor Zuo and his team have been working on vibration and thermoelectric energy harvesting in the past several years to harness power from different sources, including trains, cars, tall buildings and ocean waves.
 In 2011, the team won a prestigious R&D 100 Award dubbed the "Oscar of Invention"  for the development of retrofit energy-harvesting shock absorbers that convert vibration, bumps, and motion experienced by the suspension of a vehicle or train into electric power.
 The regenerative shock absorber for cars can harvest 100-400 watts from the vehicle vibrations under normal driving conditions. The shock absorbers also won the Energy Harvesting and Storage USA 2010 award for Best Technology Development of Energy Harvesting. 

E – HEALTH TECHNOLOGY

Scientists are aimed at developing a mobile phone app that can examine blood sample images and diagnose cancer.
WORKING:
 It would work by taking a magnified image of a blood slide via a microscopic lens attached to the smart phone, which the app would then be able to screen for evidence of leukemia -- a blood cancer.
ONCE CREATED:
Smart phone app could be used for
Step 1: Initial diagnosis of people living in remote rural areas in developing countries
Step 2: Enabling rural doctors to analyze blood samples
Step 3: Refer patients to the city hospitals for treatment or further investigation.
Creating a phone app that can perform this screening role would be a low cost and efficient solution to detect leukemia in remote and resource-poor regions. In 2012, approximately 352,000 children and adults around the world developed some form of leukemia with a similar number dying from the cancer.

-->    People living in remote areas far away from large hospitals and laboratories.
AIMS AT:
Use of high performance technology.
Doctors working in remote areas could use the technology to screen patients in their community and refer those with an abnormal result to the larger medical facilities.




CELLPHONE NEGATIVITY AFFECTS MALE FERTILITY

Previous research has suggested that Radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) emitted by the devices can have a detrimental effect on male fertility. Most of the global adult population own mobile phones. This study strongly suggests that being exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation from carrying mobiles in trouser pockets negatively affects sperm quality. 
TEST SAMPLE:
A team led by Dr Fiona Mathews, of Biosciences at the University of Exeter, conducted a systematic review of the findings from ten studies including 1,492 samples, with the aim of clarifying the potential role of this environmental exposure.
Participants in the studies were from fertility clinics and research centres, and sperm quality was measured in three different ways:
·        Motility (the ability of sperm to move properly towards an egg)
·        Viability (the proportion of sperm that were alive)
·        Concentration (the number of sperm per unit of semen). 
RESULTS OBTAINED:
In control groups, 50-85% of sperm have normal movement. The researchers found this proportion fell by an average of 8 percentage points when there was exposure to mobile phones. Similar effects were seen for sperm viability. The effects on sperm concentration were less clear. 
NEED ARISES:
Given the enormous scale of mobile phone use around the world, the potential role of this environmental exposure needs to be clarified. This could be particularly important for men already on the borderline of infertility.
Further research is required to determine the full clinical implications for the general population.

THE MEDICAL ERA (YET TO BE KNOWN)

1.TRANSPLANTABLE ORGANS:
          Thousands of people die every year due to lack of organs of transplantation. Many more are subjected to accidents with large fractures and injuries or surgical removal of tissues and organs due to cancer.
(a) JUST IMAGINE:
We are now being able to walk into a hospital and have a full organ printed with all the cells, blood vessels and proteins in the right place, simply by pressing the “print” button in computer screen.                                                                     
(b) GREAT CHALLENGE:
Each cell in the body is just a hair’s width. Cells will die out without adequate blood supply because blood supply oxygen necessary for cells to grow. Growing a network of blood vessels and capillaries is the biggest issue.                             
(c)  RESEARCHERS ACHIEVEMENT:
Using a high-tech ‘Bio-Printer’, the researchers fabricated a multitude of interconnected tiny fibres to serve as artificial blood vessels. Then they covered the 3D printed structure with a cell-rich protein based material, which was solidified by applying light to it. Lastly they removed the bio-printed fibres to leave behind a network of tiny channels coated with human endothelial cells, which self organized to form stable blood capillaries in less than a week. 
True regeneration of complex and functional organs is what doctors really want and patients really need.
2.SURGERIES ON UNBORN BABIES:
          A group of Mexican specialists in the fetal medicine have successfully performed over 200 surgeries on unborn babies, inside the womb of the mother. They ensure that this clinical method increases the quality of life and decreases chances of babies born with bad condition.
(a) NEED ARISES:
The teetotal transfusion in twin fetuses implies that they are fighting each other for blood in their body, so an imbalance arises. High-tech equipment (ultrasound) to locate anastomosis, i.e., connections between two structures of both unborn babies, thereby having increased survival to 70 percent in both unborn babies and 90 percent chances in survival of at least one.                                  
(b) ACCORDING TO SPECIALIST:
It has positive effects such as accumulation of knowledge and experience to practice and investigate medicine in unborn babies. Thus unborn baby began to be considered as a patient. The specialist physician said that in order to increase the medical possibilities of foetal medicine, foetal medicine experts Mexico Groups have developed several lines of research on neurological foetal life prediction.
 3.E-CIGARETTES:
          Physicians are increasingly recommending electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as cessation devices for their patients, but according to a new survey more research needs to be done on their safety. They are recommending e-cigarettes to their patients to help quit smoking.
(a) UNAPPROVED:
Yet, e-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. It is clear that physicians should refrain from recommending e-cigarettes until known about their safety. But the physician believed e-cigarettes were safer than smoking standard cigarettes. In a survey it is found that 13 percent are unaware that e-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA. 
(b) ATTITUDE:
 Two thirds (67 percent) of the surveyed physicians indicated e-cigarettes are a helpful aid for smoking cessation and 35 percent recommended them to their patients. 
 4.A PILL FOR OBESITY (WHITE FAT TO BROWN FAT):
          Stem cell scientist have just converted white fat into brown fat. They have created a system using human stem cells to screen for compounds that have the potential to turn white, or "bad," fat cells into brown, or "good," fat cells and have already identified two compounds that can accomplish that in human cells. According to them the person taking them could become immune compromised by targeting the same molecule and that the molecule plays a role in the inflammatory process.
(a)  WHY FAT?
When the body takes in excess energy, it is stored as lipids in white fat cells. When there are too many calories coming in and not enough burned, adult stem cells in the body produce more white fat cells, adding to a person's burden of fat. 
(b) FUNCTION OF BROWN FAT:
White fat cells store energy as lipids and play a role in the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes  and related conditions, including heart disease, while brown fat has been shown in mice to lower triglyceride levels, reduce the insulin resistance associated with type 2 diabetes, and burn white fat.
 5.BRAIN’S EXTENSIVE CAPACITY:
          Researchers tested memory of rats (similar to human) by letting them to run around, they found that there are around 11 rooms. The rooms were alike, but the rats still manage to create a separate, independent memory.
          The researchers also found that these unique representations or firing patterns were stored in the rat’s memory. They also investigated whether these memories overlapped across some rooms, but all of the memories were completely independent. 
6.UNNAMED GLASS TO SEE CANCER:
          High-tech glasses may help surgeons visualize cancer cells, which glow blue when viewed through the eyewear. The wearable technology, so new it's yet unnamed.
CANCER CELLS:
Cancer cells are notoriously difficult to see, even under high-powered magnification. The glasses are designed to make it easier for surgeons to distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells, helping to ensure that no stray tumor cells are left behind during surgery. The glasses could reduce the need for additional surgical procedures and subsequent stress on patients, as well as time and expense. 
TURE FACT:
          The good news/bad news is that science is slow. Just establishing proof of concept takes an enormous amount of time. A decade of hard basic scientific work is paying off.

CAR 2X TECHNOLOGY and TOUCH FREE MOBILE DEVICES

Every day, private motor transportation causes traffic jams, pollution and a shortage of parking spaces. Automobile is one of the biggest burdens on urban spaces. The basic intention behind this technology is to make an electric car travel a short distance autonomously. This E-Mobile will be able to park independently in the future and will also be able to find the next charging station without a driver. They are developing a dynamic model that perceives the environmental situation on the basis of cost-effective sensors.When parking, the Electronic helpers will warn of a possible collision and keep the necessary distance to the car ahead during traffic. Researchers at the Frauhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering are working on vehicles of tomorrow, which can drive through traffic without human assistance.
Sensors:
            Sensors need to recognize the environment so that the vehicle can navigate around obstacles and find their goal.
Step 1: The electric car is indented to learn to find a parking space and to park without scratch.
Step 2: The car should be able to recharge itself with the electricity without human help.
Scenario:
            The driver parks the car in the parking garage on any randomly available parking space. The car takes care of everything by itself. It communicates via a wireless interface with the charging station and the parking garage management. In this process, it provides information about its location and charge level. If the battery is empty and the charging station is free, it maneuvers in the corresponding parking station and is charged inductively without cable. Then it makes room for the next electric car and rolls to a free parking space.
Technology available:
            Project manager is referring to the robots that find their way easily in a known environment. According to him building a car similar to this technology does not take a lot of effort. Many modern cars already have most of the sensors that are required for this. They can provide a picture of the environment, when the data that these devices collect just have to be combined and interpreted accordingly. They are now developing this technology with the help of complex simulation programs and soon they want to test the results in practice on a demonstration vehicle.
            When a car is intended to move autonomously in traffic it becomes more difficult and this requires sensors that can look hundreds of meters ahead as well as software that can react to any unforeseen events. The laser scanner can perceive the surrounding area up to a distance of 200 to 300 meters.
Mobility a reality:
            Any customer could use his smart phone to call a car, which would then drive to the desired location. An on-board unit enables the car to communicate with various cloud services, other e-vehicles and the charging infrastructure. As a result, the car can provide data on its position, or how much charge is remaining.
            Information and communication solutions, both are reliable and easy to use. However, everything depends on having a convenient charging infrastructure integrated within the city.
TOUCH FREE MOBILE DEVICES
The working principle of this technology is by developing interaction between the user and the mobiles / iPads, so that it does not require touching the display. By this technology we can scroll through pages, select or move objects by moving a hand. Focus is to use this touch- free interaction in stationary installations such as laptop, PC, mobile phones and tablets.

It’s possible with the Samsung’s newest mobile phone to scroll through an e-book by moving our fingers in front of the integrated infra-red sensor.
Challenges with Present Status:
            Samsung is focusing on simple infra-red technology, which has limited sensitivity. Also the sensors will be on the top of the PC / iPad / mobile, if we move the finger just away from the sensor nothing happens.
Area coverage:
            This technology enables larger working surface so that the whole screen can be used. This technology enables the system to pick up on what we are doing in front of and beside the screen. It is possible to control the device without having to screen off the display as it creates a large interaction area. The coverage area is about 2 cm to 30 cm from the display of either the mobile / tablet.
Benefits:
·         Touch- free interactions make it cheap and power – efficient.
·         Systems become much small and uncomplicated.
·         Ultrasound technologies involved offers all the potential benefits of infra–red technologies.
·         Enables larger space from which we can detect and recognize the user’s gestures.
·         Operation is not limited to the top of the device, but can operate in front of whole screen, which is also best in terms of ergonomics.
Additional features:
            This technology had an extremely good response internationally from all mobile phone manufacturers and also has awarded an “INTERNATIONAL INNOVATION AWARD” in Japan.     
Future development:
            Researchers are trying to expand this by introducing responds to vocabulary to include gestures for the most advanced common commands such as drag and drop. This prototype promotes only few milliwatts of power from the mobile, this negligibly requires less power compared to smart phone camera.
